Let them make scarves!

 After such a great scarf class last week, and considering feedback from my students, I have decided to re-structure my classes.  I will be offering the Nuno Felt Scarf Workshop straight off, no pre-requisite.  And the reason why?  Everyone wants to make scarves!  Beautiful, wearable scarves.  And honestly, who can blame them.

Felt Without Borders

There's not much of a nuno felt community where I live. Not like painting or pottery where you can check out local galleries that show and sell those pieces. But good fiber art galleries are hard to find locally, which is why I so appreciate Etsy and the opportunity it offers me, as a nuno felt artist, to see what others are doing with the medium, as well as building friendships and sharing ideas with like minded felters. For me, this all goes under the heading, "Can't get enough felt!"

So a couple of months ago on a visit to other "Etsyans", that is Felt making Etsyans, I came across Joni Cornell, and her Etsy shop. I love the way Joni blends the colors on her scarves, the simple details and spikey fringe. In particular I fell in love with an avocado green, brown and black number. I had already sent Joni an email telling her how much I liked her work and in the course of our back and forth art chat , we hit on the idea of an exchange, the scarf I had fallen in love with in her Etsy Shop for one from my Etsy shop .

I love holding Joni's piece in my hand and knowing it came all the way to me from Melbourne, Austrailia, where I have a friend in felt.

I have used Joni's scarf as a runner so I can spread it out and enjoy all the beautiful colors

Wearable Art

My sweet young friends came over the other day and I had a great time taking photos of them in all my felt pieces.  It was a perfect spring day, so I took the pictures  outside in every corner of our beautiful yard. I just uploaded the first batch to some of my Etsy Shop  listings, and I'm pleased with the results.  The pieces come to life when they are worn, which is the whole point to wearable art!

Vibrant Springtime ~ Start to Finish

This scarf is built around one of the old scarves I found at the rummage sale.  You can see it in the bottom center of the picture of all the silk in my last post.  I used merino roving, handspun Irish yarn, curly wool locs, and silk hankie in my design.  I love the softness of the work as it is laid out before felting.   I thought it would be fun to show the scarf in the making.

Salon Bella

This morning I headed to Salon Bella for that great haircut I get from Kathy.  I promised the girls last time that I would bring my scarves for them to see.  They couldn't quite figure out how the wool ends up on the fabric, but they just loved the end result.  Now they want to come to a workshop and learn how to do Nuno. 

Dixie was enchanted with the soft and wispy Hazy Purple Print Nuno Felted Scarf, and rather than take it off, bought it on the spot.  I think Kathy looks elegant in the Shibori Triangles Nuno Felted Scarf.  I am always pleased to have my work so appreciated.
